Perennial Crops & Native Plants Workshop

Come dive into the world of sustainable agriculture and gardening at Frinklepod Farm with a focus on perennial crops and native plants.

Do you love the idea of growing and caring for perennial plants?

Come learn about how you can grow fruit trees and perennial food crops, as well as how to incorporate native plants into your landscape!

Lee Sullivan of Kennebunk Area Native Plants will start the morning sharing the benefits and wonders of adding native plants to your home garden or yard. She'll demonstrate how to sow seeds, send you home with some seeds to start yourself, and give you a preview of what native plants you can purchase later in the spring!

Next, learn from Farmer Noah about his successes and challenges with growing, organically, a wide variety of perennial fruit crops over the past 3+ decades. From rhubarb to elderberry, grapes to hazelnut, he will have something to share about almost everything.

Finally, go outside with Noah to learn the basics of fruit tree pruning. You will be invited to try out what you learn on our apple, peach, and pear trees as well as raspberry bushes.

Topics covered:

  • the best tool for each pruning task

  • different approaches for different tree varieties

  • timing and frequency of pruning

  • techniques to ensure healthy healing of the tree

  • establishing a strong "scaffold" for long-term strength of the tree

  • dwarf, semi dwarf, and standard tree sizes and root stock

  • bonus: pruning cane fruit such as raspberries and black raspberries

This workshop will happen rain or shine; please come prepared for the weather!

Monarchs in Maine

Learn all about the fascinating lives of monarchs, and what is being done to protect them, with Maine Master Naturalist Rebekah Lowell.

Monarchs are in danger. They are currently on the red list and need help. If you’ve been curious about monarch conservation, this program is for you. Over the past 8+ years, local artist and Maine Master Naturalist, Rebekah Lowell, has rescued, tagged, and released over 1,800 monarchs from local hayfields and at-risk habitat.* She shares this work on instagram (@rebekahlowell) and in her newsletter, as well as with friends and family who like to stop by and check on the project. And now she’s sharing about her work with others through programs like this one. Learn about how she spends hours a day finding, collecting, raising, tagging, and releasing hundreds of monarchs a season in a homemade conservatory she and her father built last summer. And, learn what you can do to help!

*The State of Maine has issued a permit for monarch collection and conservation.

Please note that this presentation will take place on the second floor of The Pod, our winterized building on the farm.

Composting with Worms - AKA Vermicompost!

Join Mark of WormMainea to learn all about how a bin of worms at your home can break down your food scraps into rich, fertile soil!

Mark will be demonstrating his amazing but simple worm compost system, answering all your burning questions, and selling bins you can take home to start on your own vermicomposting journey! Pre-order through his website to pick up that afternoon!

$12 adults, kids free. Please pre-register HERE.

Why vermicompost?

  • Compost indoors. Indoor composting is the best way to do continue composting over winter in northern climates.

  • Waste reduction. This is a great reason to use vermicomposting. Your garbage cans and sink disposal are convenient but wasteful ways to dispose of kitchen scraps. Vermicomposting helps you to reduce your contribution to the waste stream.

  • Produce your own fertilizer and compost tea. Worm compost and worm tea are great soil amendments for seedlings, transplants, houseplants, and gardens. Best of all, these are FREE from your worm bin.
